We developed a modification of the first person shooter Halflife 2: Deathmatch that can be played using only one button.
Why?
Severely physically disabled players, such as quadriplegics or players missing limbs, or those who cannot hold a traditional controller and therefore require an adapted input device, have a hard time interacting in games. The amount of interaction required by modern games goes beyond that of what games generally provide. To assist players with such disabilities, we explored creating an interaction model for first person shooters that requires a minimum amount of interaction. Our mod shows that you can reduce the amount of interaction without compromising gameplay too much.
How?
We put the player on top of a bot (we use the RCBOT library) but we modified it such that the player can use the spacebar or a one button controller to fire the bots gun. Players only have to precisely time their shots while the bot automatically:
hunts for enemies
aims at the nearest opponent
runs away when being hit too many times
finds health and ammo when needed
If a disabled player is able to use a mouse -autoaim or automove can be disabled which allows you to play with a little more interaction. When you run a server using our mod other players can connect to your server and you as a disabled player can participate in deathmatch with your non disabled friends!
