Blind Hero
Guitar Hero is a popular music / rhythm game which has sold millions of copies. This project investigated how to make Guitar Hero accessible to users with visual impairments. A glove was developed that is able to provide haptic feedback through little pager engines attached at each finger. Whenever the players finger starts buzzing the corresponding button on the guitar controller needs to be pressed. A study with 4 visually impaired and 8 sighted users investigated the relative performance between the modified version and guitar hero. See our ASSETS 2008 paper for more details or visit our blind Hero webpage.

TextSL
Second life is popular virtual world that offers a rich, three dimensional environment for social interaction. Unfortunately Second Life is not accessible to users who are blind or have visual impairments. TextSL is an application that allows visually impaired users to access Second Life using a screen reader. Visit the website textsl.org to learn more or download a beta version of this software. This research is supported by an NSF SGER grant.

One Switch Interfaces
A switch is an assistive input device that replaces the use of a mouse, keyboard, controller or joystick which severely motor impaired users may find difficult to use. Switches can be used to play games but typically the interaction mechanisms of popular games require a larger amount of input than what can be provided through switch input. This project investigates for a number of popular game genres how to make them switch accessible. This page provides an overview of one switch games that we developed.
